Saline Solution

Saline Solution

ABV: 0% (non-alcoholic)

A simple mixture of salt and water, added in small dashes behind the bar to season a cocktail the way a pinch of salt seasons food.

Origin

A modern bartending tool, a simple mixture of salt dissolved in water, adopted from culinary technique as craft bartenders sought a precise, controllable way to season cocktails.

History

Bartenders borrowed the idea of a saline solution directly from professional kitchens, where diluted salt water offers a way to season a dish evenly and to an exact, repeatable degree, something a pinch of dry salt can't guarantee. It gained real traction during the craft cocktail revival, as bartenders became increasingly interested in salt's ability to round out sweetness and sharpen other flavors in a drink, the same way it does in cooking, without leaving visible undissolved granules.

Flavor profile

Purely salty, with no sweetness or other flavor to speak of.

Tasting notes

A few drops dissolve seamlessly into a cocktail, subtly enhancing other flavors and rounding out sweetness the way a pinch of salt does in baking, without any of the textural grittiness dry salt could leave behind.
