Whiskey, sweet vermouth, and a dash of bitters, stirred cold and finished with a cherry -- a formula New York bartenders have been perfecting since the 1870s, allegedly first poured at a banquet for the Manhattan Club (the story's likely more legend than fact, but it's stuck around anyway). Built with rye or bourbon depending on who's pouring, it's often called whiskey's answer to the Martini -- same stirred, spirit-forward confidence, but rounder and a little sweeter. Over 150 years later, it's still one of the first things a serious bartender learns to make right.
