Hanky Panky

The Hanky Panky was invented around 1903 by Ada Coleman, head bartender at the Savoy's American Bar, after the actor Sir Charles Hawtrey asked her for something with a bit of "punch in it." She landed on gin, sweet vermouth, and a few dashes of Fernet-Branca, and when Hawtrey tasted it he reportedly declared, "This is the real hanky-panky" — giving the drink its name. Bitter, herbal, and a little theatrical, it's stayed a bartender's favorite for well over a century.
Ingredients
- Gin1.5 oz
- Sweet Vermouth1.5 oz
- Fernet-Branca2 dashes
- Orange TwistGarnish
Instructions
Chill a Nick & Nora Glass in the freezer. Put the gin, vermouth and Fernet-Branca in a cocktail shaker, fill 2/3rds with ice and shake until chilled. Strain into the chilled glass and garnish with the orange twist. Pour. Sip. Repeat.
