Gin splits its vermouth here between sweet and bianco styles, brightened with fresh orange juice and finished with a dash of orange bitters -- once one of the most popular cocktails in America before Prohibition. It fell out of fashion for decades before a modern revival brought it back. The orange juice gives it a rounder, fruitier profile than a Martini while the double vermouth keeps it complex. A genuinely important, if under-appreciated, piece of American cocktail history.
Shake all ingredients with ice and fine strain into a chilled coupe. Express an orange zest twist over the drink and use as garnish.
