Origin
The same modern tropical liqueur wave as coconut liqueur; "coconut rum" and "coconut liqueur" largely overlap as category names for the same style of product.
History
Coconut rum developed alongside the broader tropical/tiki cocktail boom, using a light rum base infused with coconut flavor to create an easy-mixing, beach-vacation-friendly spirit. Malibu remains the category's dominant, best-known brand, and coconut rum became a fixture of casual tropical cocktail menus from the 1980s onward, prized for how easily it blends into fruity, poolside-style drinks.

Tasting notes
