Fresh basil gets muddled right into gin here, along with lemon juice and sugar syrup for a bright, herbaceous modern German classic. Invented at a Hamburg bar in the 2000s, it helped kick off a wider trend of muddled-herb cocktails in craft bars worldwide. That basil's peppery freshness plays beautifully against gin's own botanicals. Shaken hard to properly express the basil, then served over ice.
Muddle basil leaves in the base of a shaker. Add gin, lemon juice, and rich sugar syrup, then shake with ice. Fine strain into a chilled old-fashioned glass and garnish with a bouquet of basil sprigs.
