Old Tom gin's slightly sweeter profile meets Yellow Chartreuse's honeyed herbal intensity here, finished with a dash of orange bitters and a splash of water. Raymond Chandler once had a character call it "strong enough to blow the top of your skull off," and the potent Chartreuse pour backs that up. This particular build follows a 1914 recipe from bartender W.J. Tarling by way of Straub -- a stirred, spirit-forward classic. Served up, a favorite among bartenders digging into pre-Prohibition cocktail history.
Stir all ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled glass. Express an orange zest twist over the drink and use as garnish.
